Free Cakes for Kids

Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child.

To raise awareness one of the local groups, Free Cakes for Kids Hackney, is having a fundraiser on 13th April where they will be selling gently used cookbooks kindly donated by people like you.

Simply drop off your cookbooks at Divertimenti, by 11th April and we'll provide them to Free Cakes for Kids Hackney to sell at their event.

Divertimenti Knightsbridge (227-229 Brompton Road, SW3 2EP) invites you to a special demo by Debora Robertson, associate food editor of RED magazine and author of Gifts from the Garden, on Saturday 25 May as part of the Chelsea Fringe 2013.

Join Debora as she shows you how to turn plants and produce into homemade gifts for the kitchen, bath and home.

No reservation is required to attend this event. Although we would encourage you to arrive at 11am attendees are welcome to join the demonstration at any point. The event is free, 11am-1pm.

With the sun shining and the chance to sample freshly made smoothies our blender demo (Marylebone High Street, 11th Aug) attracted many a passerby.

Visitors not only got to experience offerings from Kitchenaid and Waring but were also served a selection of delicious savory and sweet treats straight from the AGA.

Divertimenti’s recent garlic press demo (Marylebone High St, 28th July) attracted a surprise visit from Hollywood star and martial arts legend Jackie Chan. No doubt in London to visit the capital’s favourite cook shop (and perhaps to also see the world’s greatest athletes) Mr. Chan and his wife soon found themselves engrossed by our in store demo.

With 5 choices on display it quickly became apparent that the public preference was for garlic presses that were easy to clean and required a lighter touch with the Zyliss Non Stick Garlic Press picking up gold in the customer vote.

At the end of the day the garlic press standings were as follows:

AGA Point to Point Event
The winners of the AGA Ladies' Point to Point Championship at Cheltenham celebrated their recent success by gathering at Divertimenti in Marylebone (13th July) for an afternoon of cooking with celebrity chef and champion of British produce Rachel Green.

The ladies (and three gents) in attendance were in high spirits as they grouped into teams to tackle the culinary challenge that lay ahead of them.

As they began making what would eventually become the first course of their lunch - Asparagus, Haddock and Smoked Bacon Fishcakes - it wasn’t long before the horse play soon started, no doubt spurred on by one or two glasses of wine.

Fortunately Rachel was on hand to rein in the group and soon harnessed their energy to refocus them on creating Individual Shrewsbury Lamb Pies and Garlic Boulangère Potatoes

With the starter and mane taken care of the group then turned their attention to making dessert beginning with an Orange and Pepper Cake. Following the cake Rachel then revealed her secret to creating the perfect meringue and it wasn’t long before the competitive nature of the ladies resurfaced as they jockeyed for position in trying to stirrup the perfect Gold Glittered Meringue with Dark Chocolate Ganache & Praline.

With the preparation over and the food in the oven the collective then shared their individual highlights of the past year before settling down to a well deserved lunch.

Amongst those in attendance were:

  • Ruth Tutton – winner of most fences jumped without scoring any points in the AGA Total Control Lady Riders Championship

  • Hannah Lewis – 4th in the AGA Ladies’ Open Point-to-Point Championship Final
  • Frankie Hickman – winner of best novice in AGA races

Divertimenti Serves Up Some Food For Thought At The V&A

Divertimenti was invited to host a presentation and interactive discussion at the Victoria and Albert Museum on Wednesday (25.01.2012) as part of a series of lectures collectively entitled – Culinary Culture: The Fine Art of Food.

The talk focused on the history of Divertimenti and its ethos, its best sellers over the decades and how its collection of contemporary tableware reflected a change in trends from the traditional tableware of yesteryear.

A number of hand decorated artisan pieces were on display to illustrate these developments and to conclude participants were invited to inspect a selection of unusual and interesting kitchenware to see if they could identify their purpose.

Divertimenti kicked off the start of the new Cookery School term (Marylebone High Street 11.01.12) with renowned chocolatier William Curley showcasing recipes from his newest book Couture Chocolate.

Members of the press and public were treated to sea salt caramels, rosemary & olive oil chocolates and chestnut & sesame brownies in a demonstration that showed why William has been named four time winner of the Best British Chocolatier award by the Academy of Chocolate.

Unsurprisingly a few New Year’s resolutions to abstain from chocolate were broken that evening.

Monday (5th December) saw the launch of the Mince Pie Project at Divertimenti in South Kensington.

The project lined up 36 of the UK’s best chefs to each cook an exclusive batch of 50 mince pies to be auctioned off online in support of Action Against Hunger and The Jamie Oliver Foundation. Chefs offering their own unique take on the humble mince pie included Raymond Blanc, Angela Hartnett, Claude Bosi, Fergus Henderson and Adam Byatt.

The launch party provided the perfect excuse to taste a selection of mince pies from those participating and was attended by a who’s who of celebrity chefs including Michel Roux Jr, Philip Howard, Martin Nisbet and super bakers Eric Lanlard and Edd Kimber.

Among the offerings were mince pie whirls by Philip Howard, Martin Nisbet’s Scottish inspired mince pies made with 18 year old Chivas Regal Whisky and Anna Hansen’s mince pies filled with gin soaked sloe.

If you fancy indulging in mince pies of a Michelin-star calibre while also raising some money for charity, then it’s time to get bidding (we’ve already set our sights on our favourite mince pies from the evening).

Bidding takes place between 9th-16th December and each batch of 50 mince pies will be freshly cooked and couriered on the same day to the winners on the 22nd December. The auction leader board can be followed here (http://themincepieproject.com/auction.html)

To mark the start of the Cookery School autumn term, Divertimenti hosted its annual late night shopping evening (Marylebone High Street 06.09.11), with special guest and dessert maven David Lebovitz, showcasing recipes from his latest book, Ready For Dessert.

Despite attempts by the torrential rain to dampen the spirit of the event, the press and public were undeterred, and no doubt enticed by the prospect of tasting David’s delectable desserts, not to mention the free wine tasting provided by Majestic Wine.

Those in attendance were treated to a demonstration of candied peanuts, chocolate dipped macaroons and ginger cake, accompanied by the wit and humour that David’s blog and memoirs are famed for.

The event also saw the debut of the Divertimenti Digest; a brochure focusing on food trends and fashions, product highlights, a look forward to the Cookery School autumn term, and other gastronomic goings-on.

Divertimenti Launches All-Clad D5 Range with Celebrity Chef
D5 Launch Divertimenti
Divertimenti marked the launch of the new All-Clad D5 collection on Wednesday (11.05.11 Brompton Rd) in the most appropriate manner for a cookware range, with a cooking demonstration.

Editors and writers from Britain’s top interior and food publications were treated to a delectable lunch prepared by celebrity chef, and winner of the Relais & Chateaux 2011 Rising Chef Trophy, Daniel Galmiche.

Daniel put the D5 to the test by preparing Pan-Fried Sea Bream, Chorizo and Lime Risotto, and Sauce Vierge for the media guests. This was followed with Sticky Toffee Pudding, Orange Marmalade, and Caramel Sauce. As he took questions and gave pointers, it wasn’t long before members of the public also gathered round.

The event continued throughout the afternoon with demonstrations for the public and an opportunity to win lunch for two at the renowned Vineyard restaurant at Stockcross, where Daniel is Head Chef.

If the proof of the pudding is in the eating, judging by the reaction to the Chef’s lunch, and with canapés vanishing as soon as they left the frying pan, the D5 certainly proved itself.
