Let Ping transport you to Malaysia via the wealth of variety of recipes based around the stable ingredient of RICE.

A stunning celebration of rice with over 100 recipes from Malaysia and her neighbours, from Ping Coombes, guest judge on MasterChef.

Rice is a symbol of life, prosperity and abundance in many Southeast Asian countries and a staple food all across the world. For Ping, growing up in Malaysia rice was always the sun around which all other dishes revolved.

In this beautiful homage to rice, Ping offers advice and timeless recipes that will make this a book for every rice-loving cook to treasure. She explains whether to wash rice, the different ways to cook it perfectly, how to reheat it safely, why sticky rice isn't simply overcooked rice and how to elevate your rice-eating experience.

Ping Coombes

Ping Coombes first won MasterChef in 2014, stunning the judges with food inspired by her Malaysian heritage and once again did so when she won BBC MasterChef Champion of Champions in 2022 where she competed with the previous champions making her the first double MasterChef Champion. She was also named as one of Asia’s Most Influential Person by Tatler in 2022. Born and raised in the town of Ipoh in Malaysia, which is famous for its pomelo fruit, chicken noodles and Ipoh white coffee, Ping grew up with amazing food around her and was inspired by her mother’s cookery. She began to inherit traditional skills, starting with the basics - how to hold the ‘wok chan’ (the ladle). Perhaps most inspiring to Ping was her mother’s way of showing love and passion through cooking, something which is hugely important in Ping’s food ethos. Having lived in the UK and travelled around Europe, she draws inspiration from her heritage but delivers her food with modern twists adapting to ingredients that can be found locally.

She champions Malaysian cuisine in the UK and is a proud ambassador for Malaysian food and flavours.  Her recipes are frequently featured in various prominent food magazines and newspapers including Delicious, BBC Good Food Magazine, Waitrose Weekend as well as their Waitrose At Home series online. She has given talks on TED and the world stage such as The World Economic Forum.

Ping is a regular judge on MasterChef UK and also appeared in The Good Food Channel’s John Torode’s Malaysian Adventure, Nadiya’s Simple spices on BBC2 and hosted a few cooking videos on Waitrose Youtube Channel.  She has guest cheffed on popular daytime talk shows such as ITV This Morning and Sunday Brunch.

Ping’s first book MALAYSIA has topped the Best Seller list on Amazon and regularly features in the movers and shakers list. MALAYSIA is also published in America and has been translated into Dutch. MALAYSIA won the Asia category in the Gourmand World Cookbook Award. Ping is also a contributor to three other MasterChef Cookbooks, MasterChef Streetfood and MasterChef Kitchen Bible, MasterChef The Classics with a Twist and recently a charity cookbook These Delicious Things aim to raise funds for Magic Brekky.
